Message from the ChiefGreetings;
I'd like to take this time to personally welcome each and everyone of you to the Drumheller Volunteer Fire Departments' web page. The Drumheller Fire Department is a voluntary organization consisting of approximately 50 members operating from three firehalls (Drumheller, Rosedale and East Coulee). The Department has a Fire Chief, two Deputy Chiefs and two District Chiefs (one in Rosedale and one in East Coulee). One each of the Deputy Chiefs is appointed as Training and Fire Prevention Officer. In the event of a fire call, there is a back-up policy in place to provide additional resources between firehalls if required. All activities and functions are integrated between the three firehalls. The Drumheller Firehall was constructed in 1980, Rosedale Firehall in 1985 and East Coulee Firehall in 1984. All facilities come complete with equipment bays, staff room, washroom w/showers and storage rooms. In addition to these items the Drumheller Firehall has a kitchen facility and a hose tower. All firefighters are volunteers who answer to fire calls twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year. Recently the dispatching system for fire calls was switched from the local answering service to Red Deer E-911. The installation of the new Town radio system has allowed the Fire Department to upgrade its’ paging system. This has increased coverage and allows the firefighters carry the same pagers throughout our coverage area Many of the members have attended the Alberta Fire Training School (AFTS) or have participated in in-house AFTS sanctioned courses. These courses include Firefighter 1, 2 and 3, Pump Operator A & B, Fire Prevention, Fire Investigation and Vehicle Extrication. In addition to these courses, many firefighters have also taken Basic First Aid, CPR, WHIMIS, TDG and others to numerous to mention. All training is coordinated through the Training Officer. Although the primary role of the Fire Department is the suppression of fires, we also actively participate in fire prevention and fire investigation. The Fire Prevention Officer coordinates fire prevention programs with the local schools and, during fire prevention week, the very successful Residential Smoke Detector Program. In addition to this fire awareness classes are provided for baby-sitting courses. Investigation of fires is also performed by the fire department and, as required by the Provincial Fire Commissioners’ Office (FCO), reports are sent in to the FCO and filed within the department. In the event of a fire suspected to be arson or other criminal activity we call in the Provincial Fire Investigator out of Red Deer to assist in the investigation. The Fire Department currently has three Safety Codes Officers’ (SCO) within the organization. The Fire Department covers a wide range of services within the Town of Drumheller and I am personally very proud of the work these volunteers perform in our community.
Wm. (Bill) Bachynski Fire Chief
